Protecting Working Seniors
As a result of the depressed economy and failure of many private sector retirement plans, Illinois’ seniors are working longer prior to retirement. Many retired seniors receiving social security continue working in some capacity to maintain a suitable standard of living. I will vote against any legislation that may have the unintentional consequence of deterring employers from hiring seniors. In addition, I will work to ensure that state and federal tax policies are not punitive towards seniors who are working while receiving retirement and other social security benefits.
Easing the Tax Burden for Fixed Income Seniors
The Springfield political machine has increased property taxes every year for nearly a decade, making it increasingly difficult for seniors living on a fixed income to stay in their homes. I will support the expansion of programs such as the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption and the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Program so that rising taxes will not force seniors out of their homes.
Community Care Program
I am a strong supporter of the Department on Aging's Community Care Program (CCP). CCP is a cost effective alternative to nursing homes that provides home healthcare and quality-of-life services to persons with chronic health challenges. CCP makes it possible for seniors who would otherwise require institutionalized nursing home care to remain in their own homes and maintain their independence. Nearly 60,000 senior citizens are receiving services through CCP. The Community Care Program offers a variety of services including emergency home response, adult day service, homemaker services, and case management. This program is the cornerstone of non-institutional senior services in Illinois.
Allowing seniors to remain in their homes helps them maintain the highest possible degree of independence, increases quality of life, helps prevent or postpone hospital or nursing home care and is a cost effective alternative to institutionalized care. I will prioritize and advocate for the expansion of funding for CCP and similar programs that help aging citizens enjoy more independence in their later years.
Nursing Home Safety
I support the initiatives of the Governor’s Nursing Home Safety Task Force as set forth in SB 326. This legislation will help ensure the safety of long-term care facilities’ most vulnerable residents, increase the quality of care and encourage community-based residential options for all residents. As a legislator, I will fight to make sure that this new law is upheld and enforced.
